The project is situated on Beifeng Mountain in Fuzhou, within the "Lacquer Garden," meticulously constructed brick by brick by the renowned lacquer artist Mingxiu Tang. From the establishment of Lacquer Garden until now, nearly 30 years have elapsed. Lacquer, serving as an artistic medium, encapsulates the essence of time, mirroring the Lacquer Garden itself. With the changing seasons, the drifting clouds, and morning dew, each brick, every tile, and all the plants in the garden bear witness to the passage of time.

This renovation project for Lacquer Garden aims to reorganize and reinforce the existing structures, effectively utilizing the current space, and expanding upon the original foundation. The objective is to preserve the essence of Lacquer Garden while eliminating unnecessary elements, transforming the artist's studio into a Lacquer Garden Art Museum centered around the artistic works of Mingxiu Tang. Upon examination, the original architectural elements of the studio, such as arches and red bricks, are aesthetically pleasing and should be retained in the new construction. On the other hand, the later-added steel structures are considered temporary and do not meet the spatial and structural safety requirements for future use as an art museum, necessitating improvement in the upcoming design process.

The Lacquer Garden Museum is composed of three parts: the old brick wall, concrete, and corten steel sections. These three elements create a rich visual and textural experience, emphasizing the relationship between the new and the old, while simultaneously echoing each other in form. The pure concrete volume responds to the original pure form of Lacquer Garden, while the corten steel box continues the dialogue with the removed steel frame. Under the cover of Lacquer Garden's plants, the newly built parts on both sides are shaded, while the old wall serving as the front facade of the Lacquer Garden is accentuated. The spirit of Lacquer Garden is passed on through changes and continues in the unchanged.

The exhibition space of the Lacquer Garden is connected by several independent exhibition halls, with the Lacquer Bowl at the center. As the spiritual core of the Lacquer Garden, the Lacquer Bowl occupies a central position in the entire exhibition hall. Through the connection of the two corten steel cores, the exhibition spaces on different floors have been effectively organized, and the unity of materials and forms echoes each other, avoiding a sense of fragmentation. Even if the area of a single exhibition hall is not spacious, the entire visit experience becomes an "exploratory journey" between the new and old spaces through full utilization and mutual connection.
