The project is located in the heart of Fengwu Village. We envision it not only as a museum for visitors, but also as the spiritual core of the village and a gathering space for local residents—a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional ancestral hall. The museum is elevated to the second floor, allowing the ground floor to serve as a semi-open public space. Continuing the courtyard tradition of southern Anhui residences, the building forms a central courtyard. However, unlike traditional inward-facing courtyards, the open and elevated ground level inverts the relationship between interior and exterior, creating a richly layered, outward-facing space that reinterprets the local residential archetype.

The building’s white perimeter wall integrates seamlessly into the existing village fabric, while the inner courtyard features lightweight wooden walls in a nod to local traditions. The use of grey tiles, white walls, and timber structures reflects vernacular construction methods, yet these materials have been adapted to convey a sense of time and history. The second-floor “Village Memory Exhibition Hall” is themed “A Long Poem of Life,” narrating the journey of ordinary individuals—from childhood, to starting a family, to the end of life—through personal stories and emotions. This reconstructs the living history of the village, evokes past memories, and fosters a sense of belonging, transforming individual recollections into a shared rural cultural narrative.

Unlike conventional museum buildings, the “Village Memory Museum” does not glorify grand historical narratives or present static artifacts. Instead, it focuses on the lives of ordinary people and is imbued with humanistic care. It also serves as a venue for daily leisure, weddings and funerals, and festive gatherings. Here, old memories are preserved and new experiences continually emerge. The “Village Memory Museum” has become the new spiritual center of the village.
